It’s no secret that fashion is one of the most appealing aspects of Monster Hunter Wilds. The only thing cooler than defeating giant beasts is using their parts to make sweet-looking armor and weapons. While the Layered Armor mechanic acted as a transmog option, there wasn’t an equivalent for weapons. Thankfully, the massive Title Update 2 finally added Layered Weapons. It’s a lot more complicated than the armor system, so let’s go over how it all works.
How to Unlock Layered Weapons
Unlocking this new mechanic won’t require you to finish any missions. You’ll be able to switch up the look of your cosmetics as long as the game is updated. However, that doesn’t mean it’s easy.
To unlock a layered weapon, you’ll need to have forged the final level of its Weapon Tree. That means forging a weapon up to Rarity 8 for everything. Doing so will give you access to the final Rarity 8 design as well as any previous designs if the weapon changes. A great example of this is the Lala Barina weapons. Be prepared to grind for particular monster parts and Hunter Symbols as well.
The process is a lot simpler for your Palicos and functions just like Layered Armor does. As long as you’ve crafted a high-rank Palico weapon, you’ll receive the option to use the layered weapon.
How to Unlock Layered Artian Weapons

Artian Weapons can also take advantage of this transmog system. If you want to use custom weapons but without the highly contrasting green sci-fi design, you can switch them out for something else now! The inverse is also true if you’d like your hunter to look like they’re wielding high-tech weaponry.
You’ll need plenty of grinding and luck to unlock these options. Unlocking the Layered version of an Artian Weapon requires you to forge the Rarity 8 variant and then fully reinforce it. Since Tempered Monsters drop Hunter Symbols and Artian Materials, you’re sure to be hunting them a lot more if you want to diversify your Layered Weapon lineup.
One big problem with this system is that you can’t change the colors of the weapons. It sucks being able to color my Rathian armor to my heart’s content but not my Rathian weapons. Fingers crossed the Layered Weapons system receives some updates in the future.
